“I’ve got a rear wheel from Concorde – can you make it into a good looking piece of furniture that my wife will like?”
That was the challenge presented by a former pilot of the supersonic jet airliner.
David and Emily came up with the solution “Not everyone wants a big tyre in their house! We wanted to create a piece demonstrating the provenance of this ground-breaking piece of engineering”
Their concept was a unique shelf and mirror design with a hand sculpted oak fuselage and a shaped, toughened glass shelf. The fuselage used a multilaminate structure to avoid distortion.
“The key was to keep the wheel the right way up and allow the mirror’s reflection to create the plane’s iconic delta wing silhouette. Doing this immediately placed the wheel in context and made a true statement piece. The shaped base brought great balance to the design”
